화장품에서 화장수는 로션이나 크림 등과 함께 기초화장품의 일종입니다. 상당히 폭 넓게 사용되고 있으며 피부의 특성이나 상태에 따라 건성, 지성, 중성 등의 다양한 피부타입으로 나누어져 있습니다. 이는 같은 사람이더라도 환경에 따라서 달라질 수 있는 피부환경에 맞춰서 화장수의 타입도 다르게 사용해야 합니다. 

보통 화장수는 세안 후에 하게 되는데, 쉽게 생각해서 스킨 로션이라고 할 수 있습니다. 화장수는 보통 정제수, 에탄올, 보습제 등을 기본으로 하고 있으며, 사용 목적에 따라 산성이나 염기성, 수렴제 등의 기타 성분들이 함유될 수 있습니다. 

화장수의 종류로는 유연, 수렴, 모이스쳐, 소염, 에프터쉐이브 등으로 나눌 수 있습니다. 

유연화장수는 보통 PH조절제와 에탄올 함량 약 10~15%가 함유되어 있습니다. 염기성 성분을 제거하는 것으로 세안 후나 마사지 전에 사용하는 것이 보편적인 방법입니다. 또한 긴장된 피부를 진정시키고 피부에 적당한 수분과 영양을 공급하고, 물이나 에탄올에 용해되어 각질을 부드럽게 하는 기능을 가지고 있습니다. 

수렴화장수는 에탄올 성분이 약 25% 정도 함유되어 있는데 모공이나 땀샘에 작용합니다. 일시적으로 피부결을 수축시켜 더 이상의 단백질이나 지방의 분비를 막는 기능이 있습니다. 또한 피부결을 수축시켜 더 이상의 단백질이나 지방의 분비를 막아 줍니다. 피부결을 다듬고 파운데이션 화장이 지속될 수 있게 하는 것으로 피부염이나 세균 번식을 예방하려고 할 때도 사용합니다. 

모이스쳐는 에탄올 함량이 상대적으로 적으며 NMF가 함유된 제품이 대다수입니다. 그래서 건성피부인 사람이 주로 사용하는데 보습제가 많이 함유되어 있기 때문입니다. 가을이나 겨울철에 중년의 여성들이 주로 사용합니다. 

소염 화장수는 피부를 진정시켜주는 것으로 무더운 날 외부에 자극받은 피부를 완화시키는데 사용합니다. 

에프터쉐이브는 남성용 화장품입니다. 면도후 피부에 사용하는 것으로 상처나 세균을 샬균시켜주고 상처치유에 효과적입니다. 피부를 수축시키는 기능도 있기 때문에 면도 후에 사용하는 것이 가장 보편적입니다. 

화장수의 성분은 정제수, 에탄올, 보습제로 이루어져 있으며 추가로 자외선 흡수제나 향료 등이 목적에 따라 추가 될 수 있습니다. 정제수는 화장수의 전체 용량에 30~70%정도를 차지하고 있으며 에탄올은 주로 용해작용을 합니다. 청량감을 주기 위해서도 사용되어지는데 에탄올의 농도가 증가할 수록 피부에 자극이 많이 가기때문에 약 10~15%정도만 함유되어 있습니다. 보습제는 주로 글리세린이며 프로필랜글리콜 등도 함유되어 있습니다.
