인체는 약 60~70%의 수분으로 이루어져 있습니다. 생리 활성 물질을 운반하는 역할을 할 뿐 아니라 피부가 부드럽고 촉촉하게 유지되도록 하는 것이 인체 수분의 기능입니다. 이런 피부의 수분을 지키고, 생성하는 인체의 기능들에 대해서 알아보겠습니다.
표피의 각질층의 수분은 정상인은 약10~20%정도 차지하고 있으며 수분이 증발되거나 외부에서 과잉의 수분이 침투하는 것을 막아줍니다. 각질층의 표면에서 있는 얆은 기름막이 있는데 이를 천연보호막이라고 칭합니다.
피부의 천연보호막이란 피지막으로부터 만들어진 피부의 기본 방어능력입니다. 피지와 땀으로 구성되어 있으며 피부의 상태에 따라 유중수형 또는 수중유형의 가역적인 전환을 하는 것이 특징입니다.
외부적으로 피부의 자극이 되거나 균의 침입을 막아주는 것이 바로 이 피지막입니다.
각질층에서의 보습은 천연보습인자인 NMF로 각질층에 존재하는 모든 수용성 성분을 칭하는 말입니다. 아미노산이 가장 많으며 다음으로 무기염이 18.5%, 다음으로 피콜리돈 카르본산, 전산염이 각각 12%씩 존재합니다.
세포간지질은 세포와 세포 사이에 있는 지질을 말하는 것으로 수분의 손실을 막아주는 기능을 합니다. 세라마이드 50%, 지방산30%, 콜레스테롤 15%, 콜레스테롤 에스테르 5%로 구성되어 있는데 아토피서어 피부염의 경우에는 세라마이드가 부족합니다.
진피층에 있는 지질은 보습효과를 가지고 있는데 무코다당류가 있습니다. 명칭은 히아루론산으로 자기무게의 100~1000배의 수분을 흡수할 수 있습니다.

이는 천연보습인자라고 하는데 NMF로 불리기도 합니다. 보습력은 피부의 노화진행에 따라 감소되는 특징이 있는데 이를 보충해주는 것이 화장품으로 정제된 보습제입니다. 천연보습제의 성분으로는 콜라겐, 세라마이드, 디판테놀, 베타인, 모이스틴, 비타민 E 등이 있습니다.
천연보습인자의 원료명들을 살펴보면 젖산나트륨, 소디윰 PCA, 히아루론산 나트륨이 있습니다.
젖산나트륨은 천연보습성분으로 제품의 산성화를 방지하며 다가 알코올류보다 보습력이 뛰어납니다.
소디윰 PCA는 아미노산계열로 알레르기가 적습니다.
히아루론산 나트륨은 건성과 민감성에 효과적이며 높은 수분결합능력을 가지고 있습니다. 과거에는 닭벼슬에서 추출하였으나 현재는 미생물발효로 추출합니다.
다가알코올류에는 글리세린, 프로필렌 글리콜, 폴리에틸렌 글리콜, 솔비톨이 있습니다.
글리세린은 비누의 부산물로서 오랫동안 사용되어 왔습니다. 일반적으로 비누를 제조할때 따로 분리하여 보습용 화장품에 함유됩니다.
프로필렌 글리콜은 글리세린과 유사한것으로 점도가 낮으며 사용감이 우수합니다. 그래서 안전성도 양호합니다.
폴리에틸렌 글리콜은 크램과 유액에 많이 사용되며 분자량에 따라 상온의 성상이 다릅니다.
분자량 200~600은 액체, 600~1000은 반고제, 1000이상부터는 고체로 존재합니다.
솔비톨은 과즙의 당알코올로 크림과 유약, 치약에 사용됩니다.
